Evanston, one of the cities that make up Chicago’s famous North Shore area, is located just 13 miles north of downtown Chicago. Part of Cook County, Evanston occupies four miles of the scenic Lake Michigan shoreline with a population of approximately 75,000. Home to the prestigious Northwestern University, the city’s largest employer, sports-minded residents appreciate the close connection to Big Ten football and, of course, Chicago’s professional teams - the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs and White Sox. Named for John Evans, one of the founders of Northwestern University, Evanston has more than 75 recreational facilities for residents to enjoy as well as five beaches and 268 acres of park area. Cook County is home to 10 golf courses and more than 200 miles of multi-use trails for hikers, cross-country skiers, and equestrians. The North Shore is known for abundant dining excellence, five-star shopping, and special events. Evanston has a plethora of independently owned boutiques and Old Orchard Center is right next-door in Skokie. From the Farmer’s Market to the Lakeshore Art Festival, there is something to do almost every weekend. According to the Chicago Tribune, “Evanston…has a lot of benefits…These include its proximity to Chicago, excellent transportation, a lakefront location and beaches, Northwestern University's economic and cultural benefits.”
